The Academy Awards, the oldest entertainment awards ceremony, actually started on radio in 1930 and wasn’t televised until much later, when televisions graced living rooms throughout America. This, at least to me, is a fascinating tidbit since the Awards presentation today is nothing if not a visual extravaganza. From the Red Carpet lead-up to the bestowing of the prizes, the ceremony is a feast for the eyes, showcasing designer clothing and jewelry competing for attention. Last night’s 89th Academy Awards ceremony was no disappointment, with amazing couture, jewelry and, of course, replica watches on display. Here’s a smattering of wrists glimpsed.
With 14 nominations and six wins, La La Land was front and center during much of the evening. The film won in various categories: Directing, Actress in a Leading Role, Cinematography, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song) and Production Design.
Damien Chazelle, who won for Best Director, is the youngest person in history to win in that category. The Providence, Rhode Island-born director was seen sporting his pink gold replica Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin Small Second. The 40mm watch is powered by a self-winding movement with hours, minutes and seconds, and it features a beige, sunray-brushed dial with gilt hour markers.
Actor Terrence Howard wore the piaget dancer skeleton replica 38mm timepiece in 18-karat white gold set with diamonds, while his wife, Mira Pak, accompanied him wearing a Piaget Secrets and Lights necklace in 18-carat white gold set with 195 diamonds. The slim Dancer features features an exhibition caseback for a personal view of the ultra-thin hand-wound movement.
